This year’s ESSCO Annual General Meeting (AGM) was hosted at the University of Waterloo from June 1st to 4th. Over 75 delegates met for a weekend of workshops, sessions, and panels, with the focus of leadership development and sharing of best practices. The theme of the conference was Ideas in Action, and featured speakers from ESSCO, the CFES, OSPE, PEO, National Bank, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and General Electric.

Delegates arrived on Thursday night, with a campfire and ESSCO Olympics activities at the Columbia Ice Fields. Friday saw the beginning of sessions, with three streams: two delegate streams, and a stream for the new Vice President Externals (or equivalents). Morning sessions included Council 101, Networking 101, How to Chair a Meeting, Student Engagement Planning, Finance, and Hosting an Engineering Competition. The afternoon consisted of sessions by the CFES, OSPE, Engineers of Tomorrow, General Electric, and a Startup Panel. In addition, there were sessions on How to be a Good Head Delegate, the Role of the VPX, and a Feedback Workshop.
Saturday morning began with a presentation and question and answer period by MPP Catherine Fife. In her presentation, Fife emphasized the importance of advocating for your profession, and why you should not be intimidated to enter politics. Both PEO and NBC gave presentations. Other sessions included Motion Writing, Plenary 101, Sponsorship, How to Social Media, Ask an Executive, Technical Communication, Recognizing and Surviving Burnout, Team Management, and Thinking up a Storm.
After a busy day of sessions, a banquet was held at THEMUSEUM. The keynote speaker Tim Lougheed gave an inspiring speech on the importance of having faith and how to move through life.
At AGM, the 2017-2018 ESSCO Executive Council was elected. The outgoing executive team will be officially ending their term on July 1st.

Thank you to the conference chairs, Kieran Broekhoven and Ola Suchon, session presenters, and the organizing team at Waterloo for making this conference possible. The conference was a valuable learning experience for many delegates across Ontario, and was successful in developing the engineering leaders of tomorrow.

I’m this year’s VP Communications for ESSCO. I am in my second year of Civil Engineering and Society at McMaster University. My goals this year are to encourage more student involvement and work towards making ESSCO more known to engineering students!
