On March 16 th -18 th the First Official ESSCO Hockey tournament was held in Ottawa at the
Richcraft Sensplex. 12 teams from Engineering Universities in Ontario came all the way from
Windsor, Sudbury and anywhere in between, to participate and enjoy a weekend in Ottawa.
The teams were all split evenly into three different pools, with 4 teams in each. Each
team played at least three games, with the winner of each pool moving onto the semi-finals.
There was also a wildcard team chosen, after the round robin, to move into the semi-finals as
well. This team was the one with the highest point total out of all the remaining teams in the

The tournament began on Friday night with each team playing one game each. It was a
great start to the weekend with some high level, fun games. The next day, on Saturday each
team played two more games, to finish off the round robin section of the tournament. At the
end of the day on Saturday, the teams that won their pools were: OttawaU, McMaster, and
Laurentian B. With Guelph taking the Wildcard position to move into the semi-finals.
Sunday began with McMaster facing off against Laurentian B in the first semi-finals
game. The game was intense with McMaster starting off strong and Laurentian B bringing the
heat in the second and third periods. McMaster ended up beating Laurentian 2-1 and moving
into the finals. The second game of the day was between Guelph and Ottawa U. Ottawa U were
the favourites going into the game. But after 3 periods of intense hockey, the game was
brought into a shootout, with Guelph taking the win and completing the upset over Ottawa U.
The finals happened later in the day, with Guelph taking on MacMaster. It was a close game
between the two teams, but MacMaster ended up coming out on top and taking first place in
the tournament.

Overall, the weekend ran fairly smoothly, with teams enjoying the opportunity to play
against other schools from all over Ontario, and using it as a chance to see old friends. We
appreciate anyone who came out to play, watch or help with the tournament, and hope to see
many of you out there again next year!
