From June 1st to the 3rd, ESSCO hosted its first annual Soccer tournament in Mississauga at Erin Mills Athletic Fields. Teams from across Ontario had the opportunity to compete for a trophy and of course, bragging rights. The tournament was split into 2 pools, which every team playing at least 2 games in a round robin format. After round robin, the 3rd and 4th seed teams competed for the third place while the top two teams faced off for the title.
On Friday, each team played at least 1 game, on Saturday the teams played the remaining of their round robin games. Sunday concluded the tournament with the championship game. From Pool 1 Windsor A followed by Conestoga moved on to the next round. From Pool 2 Ryerson and Windsor B moved forward. Windsor B elected to forfeit their chances in the tournament going forward which allowed Waterloo’s team to gain a chance to steal third place from Conestoga.
The championship game between Ryerson and Windsor A was intense and physical. The game was close all the way but Windsor pulled ahead with a 5-4 lead mid second half and held on until the end. While the bronze medal was not played at the tournament, Conestoga and Waterloo agreed to play their game in Waterloo on another date. Windsor’s was not able to take the trophy home with them because the trophy needed to be engraved but the trophy was present. The winning team still had the opportunity to celebrate and take pictures. The trophy has been presented to Windsor at ESSCO AGM.
The while there were some hitches at the beginning of the tournament, issues smoothed themselves out. There were plenty of pictures taken from the tournament that will be available for viewing. Thank you to all the players that took the time to participate or spectate the tournament. We hope to see more players next year!
