Ontario professional engineers are part of a community of more than 85,000 PEO licence and certificate holders committed to enhancing the quality of life, safety and well-being in the province. The P.Eng. designation represents high standards of engineering knowledge, experience and professionalism. To become a professional engineer in Ontario, you must be licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

- It may be required by law. A license is required for certain kinds of engineering work as outlined by the Proffesional Engineering Act.
- Premium insurance rates. Being a member of the PEO entitles you to premium insurance plans on life, home, auto, and disability.
- Career opportunities. As a licensed professional engineer, you have the right to use P.Eng. after your name and "engineer" in your job title. Having a P.Eng. demonstrates you have met a rigorous educational standard, and are committed to a strict code of ethics. It is common for senior management positions to require a P.Eng. license.
